The Sykesville Gate House Museum (opened 1997) is a property owned and run by The Town of Sykesville (incorporated 1904). The museum holds collections relating to the general history of the foundations and development of the Town of Sykesville. Prior to the 1990s, the Gate House and its surroundings belonged to Springfield Hospital Center. Springfield Hospital was originally founded in 1896 as "Maryland's Second Hospital for The Insane," and parts of the original campus still serve as a state Department of Health institution of mental healthcare. The museum is closed on Federal holidays, Dec 17 through the Friday after President's Day, and other dates as needed.
