The purpose of the Register of Wills and the Orphans’ Court is to offer protection. The office protects: 1) The decedent – that his or her last wishes will be carried out. 2) The heirs, legatees, and creditors – that they will receive what they are entitled to. 3) The State of Maryland – that the proper taxes and fees will be collected.
